"Now is the Time for all Americans to come to the aid of the Penny."

In recent years, the penny has come under increasing attacks from many corners of our society. From Andy Rooney's demonstration on 60 Minutes several years ago at New York's Grand Central Station on the disrespect shown the penny by commuters, to congressional Legislative initiatives to delete the penny from our coinage.. The penny much like Rodney DangerfieId gets "very little respect." Notwithstanding this sad state of affairs as it relates to the most important coin in our coinage and currency system - the penny, there is an uncompromising commitment by many of us to the continued circulation of the penny.

Let me share with you my personal relationship and devotion to the penny. Also, my efforts over the last ten (10) years to promote the penny as the symbol of "self-help and self-reliance", and as the central vehicle in conveying lessons of Character, Scholarship and Patriotism to young people.

My personal relationship and affinity for the 'penny' started when I was a youngster around three or four years old. For some unknown reason I swallowed 5 pennies. I still remember picking up those pennies from the comer of a foot-pedal sewing machine and swallowing them one after the other. What possessed me to do such a foolish thing, I'll never know. It was probably the same thing that possessed college students in the sixties to swallow goldfish; crowd in telephone booths; streak stark naked in public places and chug-a-lug beer until they passed out. "The devil made us do it." Seriously, whatever it was, in the Spring of l984 (forty-two years later), I was awakened around 2:00 a.m. one morning from a deep sleep by the hand of God" with the inspiration to write the words "A PENNY SPEAKS." These words expressed by a "penny" itself, convey the burning desire to unite with other non-productive, abused and seemingly worthless pennies to make positive contributions to society and improve the conditions and the quality of life for our people through united "PENNY POWER."
